Soft, Medium or Hard: which fits your playing?

The right reed is not simply the hardest or the easiest. It is a balance that lets you work on articulation, intonation and sound without fighting your breath support.

Describe resistance before naming it

Consider initial response, support in the middle register and behaviour through dynamic changes separately. 'Hard' or 'soft' alone rarely gives enough information.

  • Is the attack delayed or too immediate?
  • Does the sound stay stable at piano?
  • Does the upper register demand excess pressure?
  • Does the embouchure tire unnecessarily in long rehearsals?

A practical starting matrix

Beginners and players facing long rehearsals may begin the conversation with Soft; those seeking a versatile baseline with Medium; experienced players wanting firmer support with Hard. This is a communication shortcut, not a rule.

What to put in the request

Name two things you like about your current reed and two you would change. Add the instrument model, staple dimensions and playing context. Comparisons such as 'darker but with an easy attack' are useful.
